Buying Weight Plates? Here's What to Look For!

Interested in buying weight plates but not sure where to start? Don't worry, we've got you covered! In this guide, we share valuable tips and important points to consider when purchasing weight plates. So, before you take your next workout to the next level, make sure you are well-informed about buying weight plates.

Types of Weight Plates

There are two types of weight plates available: Olympic weight plates and standard weight plates. Olympic weight plates have an inner ring diameter of 50 mm and are suitable for Olympic barbells, while standard weight plates have an inner ring diameter of 25 mm and are suitable for standard barbells. Furthermore, these plates can vary in material and weight to cater to individual training preferences and needs.

Material

Weight plates are made from different materials, each with its own characteristics and benefits. We mention the most common materials and their associated advantages so you know which material suits your needs and budget.

Rubber Weight Plates
Rubber weight plates are popular for their durability and protection against damage. They are ideal for intense workouts, and you can safely drop them on the floor. However, be cautious when buying rubber weight plates. Bumper plates are entirely made of rubber, but there are also plates with just a rubber outer layer.

Cast Iron Weight Plates
A cast iron weight plate is sturdy and offers a classic look. They are often available in different finishes and have a long lifespan. The significant advantage of cast iron plates is the space they occupy compared to rubber plates. The plates, with the same weight, are often narrower, allowing you to add more weight to a barbell.

A downside is that the weights can cause significant damage when not placed carefully. Additionally, the plates also make considerably more noise than rubber plates.

Plastic Weight Plates
Plastic is a lightweight material and is especially a cost-effective option for weight plates. These plates are also easy to clean. The major drawback is that they do not last as long as other weight plates, especially when it comes to heavier weights. This material is usually only used with lighter weights.

Polyurethane Weight Plates
Polyurethane weight plates combine durability and aesthetics. They are resistant to scratches and damage, making them suitable for heavy use.

Weight

When choosing a set of weight plates, it is important to consider the correct weight. Different weights allow you to adjust your training intensity and gradually build your strength.
